Brainstorming some interesting Master's Thesis topic ideas
Thankfully the library administration was able to figure out a way give me a full-time position again (which officially begins today) so I should be able to get free tuition at my university if I decide to work on another master's degree. I already have a master's in library science and my undergrad majors were history and French, but literature would interest me the most now or maybe popular culture studies, but I'm pretty sure my university doesn't have that.

So I was thinking about possible subjects for my master's thesis if I do work on literature. I hope to take some creative writing classes for my degree so maybe I could finagle my way into doing a fiction project for my thesis. But all my fiction ideas these days are fanfictional so I don't know how that would play with my adviser. Or I could do a non-fiction piece on some aspect of fanfiction, probably in relation to science fiction. Another idea I've kicked around for awhile is a study of the military and war experiences of SF authors like David Drake, Joe Haldeman, Jerry Pournelle and John Ringo and how it affects their writing. Maybe I could compare them to "mainstream" literature vets like Tim O'Brien. Or perhaps I could do something about how the political views of certain SF authors (Orson Scott Card, Pournelle, Ringo, Larry Niven etc) do or don't affect their fiction.

I probably won't start working on my degree for at least a year (I have to take care of the admissions stuff and probably study for and take the GRE again) but I wanted to write this down so I could come back to it when its time to actually chose a topic. What are your thoughts on this and do you have any stuff you personally would like to do a thesis on or see someone do a thesis about?

Is there much academic work on fan fiction these days?

Regarding political views of science fiction writers, you could add the Trotskyist Trio to your list: Ken MacLeod, Eric Flint, and China Mieville. (Can't remember if Steven Brust has a Trotskyist past as well.) MacLeod is an interesting case, because he has won Libertarian awards for his SF too.

Interesting suggestion. I'm not that familiar with Trotskyism and have yet to read any MacLeod and Mieville, but I am pretty familiar with Flint's alt history stuff. I could also see the possibilities of doing something about the development of the military alt history genre too. Or maybe I could just concentrate on one author, probably someone like Haldeman who writes alot on his journal/blog.

I have stumbled across articles about fanfiction in semi-academic web journals and conference papers. I did a quick search on Dissertation Abstracts and MLA and got a few hits like "Inventing a Universe: Reading and Writing Internet Fan Fiction" (which seems to concentrate on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is the main fandom I write in) and there was also a couple of things like "Bodily spectacles, queer re-visions: The narrative lives of 'Harry Potter' slash online." Slash doesn't interest me too much, but I could end up writing and researching it some because its such a big part of fanfiction.

I don't think I would want to tackle Libertarian SF though, its one of those subjects that makes my mind go fuzzy every time I read about it.

My particular interest in fanfiction is Crossovers, especially Buffy/Angel ones. It would be nice if I could do something with that since I already have a pretty decent handle on the existing "literature."

Well, it actually sounds like you have lots of good ideas that you could pursue.

Thanks, I guess we'll just have see which one shakes out to be the best. I'll probably end up picking yours and our peoples on my flist's brains for info at some point :)

Upon further consideration, I believe I'll stay away from topics that focus on politics because thinking about that kind of stuff for too long just ends up depressing me.

It also occurs to me that I might be able to get an article out of examining cheating at cards in SF and what it says about the characters who do it. David Weber uses it in both his Empire of Man and Empire from the Ashes trilogies and I think the Fizzbin episode (A Piece of the Action) of ST:TOS series also counts. Just need to find another example or two and the mental fortitude to churn out an academic paper and I'm good to go :)
